The curriculum that is taught in the reception class meets the requirements set out in the revised National Curriculum at Foundation Stage. Our curriculum planning focuses on the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to meet the Early Learning Goals in each area of development. In addition we provide a comprehensive phonics programme which continues into KS1.
The school fully supports the principle that children develop intellectually, creatively, physically, socially and emotionally through play. Providing well-planned experiences based on children’s play ensures both enjoyment and challenge in their learning. The Reception Year builds on children’s experience both at home and in pre-school setting and we work hard to build positive partnerships so that children enter schools confidently. On-going assessment is an integral part of the learning process. Systematic observation and assessments inform our planning for the next steps in children’s learning; this is recorded in the EYFS profile which describes each child’s achievements during the year.
