We follow the 'Letters and Sounds' phonics programme (published by the DFES). This is a comprehensive and systematic program which starts by introducing children to the sounds in words, quickly applying them in their reading and writing. Children then move on to understanding phonic and spelling patterns in order to read fluently and make accurate spelling choices. Children begin this programme in Year R and it continues into KS1.
Children are introduced to reading books using the book band scheme. This uses colour bands to provide children with a graded introduction to reading, allowing them to gain confidence and understanding across a range of books. Children take these books home to share each day, and are encouraged to exchange them regularly. There are a wide range of books in each band and children are soon able to choose from these independently. Teachers assess whether a child is ready to progress to the next band, using a range of measures including how well they understand and are able to discuss what they have read.
